Castel Sant'Angelo

This castle has been used from everything as a protective safe keep for the Pope to a military barracks to a prison....  It is quite fortified, which would make it work just fine for all these reasons!  The bridge that leads to it is lined with 12 angels, each one designed by Bernini - it's called Ponte Sant'Angelo.  At one point in time, a pope had a vision of the archangel Michael above the castle, so he had a statue built to resemble his vision and the castle became a church.

After our visit here, we went over to St. Peter's for our second visit there.  Then it was time to head back to the hotel and pack up for our morning flight back to our house.  We had a great time - hope you enjoyed our trip!
