Forests

Forests are all over the area!  We never imagined that the city would have so many trees and would be surrounded by so much forest.  The main forest is the Foret de Soignes.  Above is the bluebell forest of Halle - seen for just a couple of weeks every spring, the bluebells are beautiful!

And this is a path through the Foret de Soignes near Jesus Eik, very near our house.

Frites

Frites, fried twice and served with mayonnaise!  A Belgian tradition unlike most others, frites were actually invented in Belgium but France took the credit so we call them French fries...

Sold most everywhere, served in metal bowls in restaurants or in paper cones to go

And yes, even the frozen variety is better than most fries - and all of these are frites!

Advertised all over and so easy to get...

Casey, Alex, and Amanda have some, on those tiny little forks, outside St. Michels Cathedral

Flanders Field

Flanders Field, where poppies grow.  An intense battleground during WWI and now an American Cemetery.  A touching memorial to the appreciation the Belgians have toward all countries who helped them to remain free during both world wars.  We attended a Memorial Day ceremony here that was inspirational!
